Latest Kanpur Metro Project Updates
Fast-paced execution of the Kanpur Metro project by UPMRC has already seen many important deadlines being met well in advance. The total estimated cost of Kanpur Metro Phase 1 (both lines) is approximately ₹11,076.48 crores.
Major developments and progress:
Orange Line Tunneling: Tunnelling work of the underground section of the Orange Line (connecting Kanpur Central to Naubasta) is almost completed. It is important to note that the major work of tunneling was under the major railway lines.
Corridor 2: The construction of the elevated section of the Kanpur Metro Blue Line (Agriculture University to Barra-8) has also started. The I-Girder Erection for this elevated section is clearly visible. It can be expected that the elevated structure of Corridor 2 will also be completed in very short time.
Future Corridors in Plans: Plans to build 5 new corridors with an additional length of about 52 km to connect places such as Unnao & Mandhana are in the works. These new proposed corridors are part of an extensive ‘Vision-2051’ plan.
Why the Kanpur Metro is a Game Changer
Kanpur Metro is more than just a transport service – it’s a foundation for a smart city. The development has brought multiple benefits:
- Fast and Reliable: It is a much faster mode of travel. For example, travelling from IIT Kanpur to Kanpur Central metro stations now takes just 25 minutes by metro (instead of an hour by road).
- Traffic Free: It has reduced a lot of traffic on roads by encouraging people to leave behind their private vehicles. The monstrous traffic on Kanpur’s roads is a thing of past.
- Green Travel: Metro is electrically powered and thus has been helping Kanpur reduce its air pollution considerably, making it a cleaner city.
- Connectivity: It connects important educational institutes (CSJM, DAV Vidyapeeth), hospitals (LLR Hospital), business areas (Naveen Market, Z Square Mall) and other parts of the city making it easily accessible.
Kanpur Metro is in its growing phases and keep improving to provide efficient travel for all the residents and visitors to Kanpur. With new metro stations coming online and Blue Line shaping up, future of travel in Kanpur is very bright indeed.
